It took me five years and eight brochures to meet Reiki. Like that guy your friends want to set you up with, I was reluctant, but intrigued. My afternoon walks would take me past a tiny healing clinic nestled along an alleyway in downtown Menlo Park, you’d miss it if it weren’t for the Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. Each time I passed I’d look for the prayer flags waving me in and would occasionally pluck a brochure from their small outside altar.
After a long period of healing a back injury, finding yoga, opening in meditation and becoming increasingly intuitive, a friend gave me a book about Reiki. Thankfully it explained much of what I was experiencing. I’d become so empathic that my hands were like divining rods sensing trouble in passersby and longing to reach out and touch random people on the street. This was new and a bit unsettling. I tried channeling this urge into designing healing gardens, but during the dot-com bomb of 2001, it wasn’t proving lucrative. So I finally made the call to Donna Gaus, the Reiki Master who owned and ran The Reiki Clinic of Menlo Park. A month later I was signed up to take my Level I Reiki Attunement class and its been enchantment ever since!
What I’ve learned about Reiki over the years is the importance of creating a relationship with this energy gushing from the Divine. There are many healing modalities which manage the body’s own natural chi, but a flow of pure chi flooding through the practitioner into the recipient is an entirely different experience. This relationship has been one of the most important of my life. It is forgiving and always available..even when you are not.
What is Reiki?
The word Reiki is Japanese for “universal life force energy.” The Usui System of Reiki is a channeling of Universal Life Force Energy..but what does that mean? What does Universal Life Force Energy mean and what does it do, where does it come from? The shorter term and the one I use is ‘pure chi’. It is the fabric of what surrounds us, the essence and balance found throughout the natural world. Reiki is an intelligent energy moving at such a high frequency that everything it touches is brought into perfect harmony.
More plainly, Reiki is an energy healing modality which allows the practitioner to channel pure chi through them into whomever or whatever they're working with. We can use acupuncture as another example of an energy healing modality. The acupuncturist uses needles to tap into the meridians, energy points along the body, to open and clear any blockages. With Reiki, our tool is the clear, clean channel we create to bring pure chi through us into the client to clear out any 'yuck' being held in the body.
Why Do We Need Reiki?
In the realm of quantum physics, everything is considered to be energy...even our bodies are energy condensed into matter. So when our energy is out of balance why not treat energy with energy? But how do we know when our energy is out of balance? We’ve labeled people with ‘dark energy’ or ‘negative energy’, but really we are all energetic beings operating at various frequencies. These frequencies are dependent on our ability to be in a pure state.
We enter this world as pure bright beings in the bodies of infants. Our energy field or auric field extends three feet in every direction of our body and is strongest when we're young. As we mature we become inundated with imprints from parents, peers and teachers. These imprints are like invisible layers which can inhibit our energetic frequencies which feed our emotional patterns.
Emotional patterning, the way we manage our emotions, can lead to depression, anxiety, and stress. By the time we've reached adulthood we've created unhealthy ways to self-medicate our issues, rather than healthy processing. Emotions left unprocessed almost always show up as physical maladies, digestive disorders, sleep disorders, skin problems, thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances, join and muscular inflammations, these are all ways that our bodies can be affected by emotional 'yuck' stored up in the body. By the time we experience the physical manifestations, we're so uncomfortable that we want a pill from western medicine to cure the symptoms. Most often the pharmaceuticals we take have their own scroll of side effects and the carousel begins! If we take time to explore, discover and face the true issues affecting our lives we then have the ability to shed the excess 'stuff' and make room for our true potential.
Quite simply when our energy is out of balance, we’re not walking around in daily life saying “Gosh, my energy is out of balance!” When the body’s natural energy flow is out of balance it shows up emotionally and physically. Along with the imprints on our psyche, modern life confronts us all the time with elements pushing our energy out of balance. Pesticides in our foods, pollution, the constant flurry of wi-fi and other electromagnetism coming from electronics, and other people’s electromagnetic fields can all have disorienting effects on our own energy fields, particularly when our own core vibration is weak.
The Impact of Reiki:
The practice of having a flow of Reiki, pure chi, channeled into the body stimulates and strengthens our core energetic known as the Sushumna Nadi, (pronounced: shuh-shoom-nah nah-dee). This is the energetic flow running parallel to the spine and linking up each of the chakra centers. As this core energetic becomes vibrant we become more like lighthouses shining our energy out as opposed to sponges, taking energy on.
Each of our cells contain their own energy source. The cells in our bodies will always align with a higher energy. It's why we feel better when we eat healthy, exercise, meditate, even pray. So when there is a high frequency of energy like Reiki coursing through the body, then the cells want to align with it. It's similar to that standout positive person we know. We just want to hang out with that person all the time! Same thing with Reiki, your cells just want to hang out with it all the time! As the cellular body aligns with a higher energy, it begins to guide our emotional and physical body towards what is in our highest alignment. We become less reactive and more responsive. We suddenly have more energy for relationships, career, family, even creative pursuits. We become connected with our center and return to our whole being as opposed to externalizing our energy. The more vibrant we are from within, the less external influences will have on our being. This allows more space for our true state to come forward and inform how we are in the world.
Anyone can receive Reiki, whether you believe in it or not. Additionally, anyone can learn this beautiful healing modality. I so often hear from students how it has changed their lives. Quite simply, it has the power to guide us into our highest alignment.
