Trying to find a good explanation of Reiki can be challenging when we're trying hard not to sound woo-woo and explaining it to new clients, friends or family. Let's face it, we shy away from what we don’t understand. So when we begin to explain Reiki as something other-worldly or spiritual healing, it can prompt people to stare at us as if we have an arm growing out of our head.
When I came into this work, I heavily researched quantum physics principles in order to understand energy, how it works and how it affects our body. It helped me gain an understanding of what this was and why it's so beneficial.
What? What the heck is this 'Reiki' thing? I hear all kinds of explanations for Reiki most of them vague, overly spiritualized pontifications. So here is a clean, clear shot of what Reiki is: "Reiki is an energy healing modality which uses a very pure energy channeled through the practitioner into the recipient.” I like to use the analogy of another energy healing modality, acupuncture, where the acupuncturist uses needles to tap into the body’s energy flow and restore it to balance, the same goes for Reiki. As practitioners, our tool is a channeling of that pure ‘chi’ rather than using needles to open up the body’s natural flow of energy.
How? Each cell in our body has a proton (+ charge), electron (- charge) and a neutron (neutral charge). So when we say that our bodies are energy condensed into matter, there is science to support it. Because of its higher frequency, the cells in the body respond quite well and want to align with Reiki. The more it is received, the more the cells in the body body begin to align with its true balance. This facilitates a physical decompression, an emotional clearing and an overall restoration to the entire person.
Why? Daily stressors and environmental factors can push us out of balance. Have you ever sat in front of your computer monitor and felt drained? Think of how your body feels when you eat a giant cheeseburger. Or what about feeling plain-old icky after an interaction with a difficult person in your life? These are all examples of what make us feel off-kilter on a daily basis, now think about how it all adds up over time?
Central Nervous System vs. Parasympathetic Nervous System: Without going into a physiology lesson, the Central Nervous System helps keep us in our 'fight or flight' mode. We're engaged in this mode frequnetly which can build anxiety and chronic tension in the body. Our Parasympathetic Nervous System helps our 'rest and relax' mode. Often we don't give ourselves enough time to fully be in this mode. Reiki plays a significant part in restoring the body’s parasympathetic nervous system and natural balance between the two nervous systems.
As a practitioner, it's my job to help the client feel safe and supported so they may decompress fully. Having a clear explanation of what Reiki is and how it's going to benefit them is the very first step in establishing a safe and supportive atmosphere. Hopefully this helps you understand and explain what Reiki is without the woo-woo so you can share it with those you care about.
